“…For as long as we both shall live”

Joe: If I hadn’t been Fox Books and you hadn’t been The Shop Around the Corner and we’d just met —

Kathleen: Don’t.

Joe: I would have asked for your phone number and I wouldn’t have been able to wait 24 hours before calling and asking, “How about coffee, drinks, dinner, a movie, for as long as we both shall live?”

Well, I shouldn’t have done it… I shouldn’t have watched this movie … not today! Well, I am not a believer in St. Valentine’s Day anyway… but it happened that they played my favorite movie on T.V. ; “You’ve Got Mail”. I know it is not a super sophisticated movie, yet… how she looks at him, how his eyes narrow when he smiles at her, how they both laugh simply from the heart, how he cares enough to bring her daisies (her favorite flowers), how they talk – about everything and anything (she tells him: “The odd thing about this form of communication is that you’re more likely to talk about nothing than something. But I just want to say that all this nothing has meant more to me than so many somethings,”) it’s how little things built up into big things, and how their relationship witnessed all the seasons of New York to just flourish and blossom in spring. It’s how he wipes away her tears at the end tenderly saying: “Don’t cry, Shopgirl. Don’t cry.”

Now all I can think of is, I want someone to bring me orange lilies! And there’s only one song ringing in my ears:

I’ve got a crush on you, sweetie pie

All the day and night-time hear me sigh

I never had the least notion

That I could fall with so much emotion

I wonder…Could you coo,

Now, could you care

For a cozy cottage we could share

The world will pardon my mush

‘Cause I have got a

Crush, my baby, on you

I’ve got a crush on you,

I’ve got a crush on you,

Sweetie pie

Sweetie pie*
